Prior to the adaptation of its name, Sarojini Nagar was known by Vinay Nagarand and Laxmi Bai Nagar, Beena Nagar was known by East Vinay Nagar and the Netaji Nagar was known as West Vinay Nagar. It is named after the name of the popular women freedom fighter, Sarojini Nagar. The area is encircled by the Netaji Nagar, Chanakyapuri, Nauroji Nagar, Laxmibai Nagar, South Extension and Safdarjung Enclave. It is in the close vicinity of Chanakyapuri which is amongst the most amazing and beautiful areas of Delhi and is also the home of many consulates and embassies, including those of Russia and United States.

Sarojini Nagar is located in the locality of South West Delhi and it is amongst the places of the city where one can buy fabrics and clothes. Other than several big showrooms available in the market of local and international brands, the major crux of this market is occupied by the street side shops selling garments of many colours, designs and all size.

Recently the market was also in the international news at the time when a small shop got destroyed (it has been rebuilt now) in the blast of Diwali in the Delhi bombings of 29th October 2005.

There are many sections in the market with which it is surrounded and the localities also call them from the following names. 90% of this area’s shows are owned by family.

  • Mandir wali side
  • Subzi Market
  • The Babu Market
  • Central Market
